TANGERINES DEFEAT VIOLET

23rd July 2002

The youth team acquitted itself well yesterday in a pre-season friendly when they dispatched Dundee Violet 3-0 at Gardyne Road.

After forcing the Violet keeper into a few good saves early on, United finally broke the deadlock in 25 minutes after a trialist played a though ball for Graeme Holmes who slotted home at the third attempt.

After the break, United continuously pressurised the opposition goal and on the 60-minute mark, Stephen McGowan drove home after the keeper parried his first attempt. United came close again minutes later when a fine 30-yard strike by a trialist hit the woodwork.

In the last 20 minutes of the match, the Violets' attempts to bring themselves back into the match were thwarted when a through ball from, again, a trialist, found John McKenzie who rounded the keeper and finished from eight yards.

Dundee United: Combe, Allum, Callaghan, Trialist, Anderson, Gartland, Bell, Holmes, McGowan, Trialist, McMenemy. Subs: McKenzie, Hardie, McMillan, Trialist, Hunter, Bruce.
