THOMPSON GOAL NETS UNITED THE POINTS

13th April 2002

United secured another three post league split points to keep in touch with city rivals Dundee whom the Tangerines take on next Saturday at Dens Park. In a match where the home side deserved to win, Alex Smith started with the same side that had defeated Hibernian last week with only one exception, that being the return of captain Danny Griffin with Stephen O'Donnell dropping to the bench. This was only a temporary arrangement however when United were dealt a blow early into the match, Griffin having to come off early and his place taken by O'Donnell. This meant that United now reverted to the same side as six days earlier.

United made the clearer chances in the first half however they appeared too deliberate in front of goal and rarely troubled the visiting rearguard. 0-0 at the break, it was more of the same in the second although United clearly had the upper hand. In the 67th minute, the only goal of the game did arrive and it was thoroughly deserved, Thompson tapping in from one metre after the Motherwell keeper could only parry out a Winters shot.

In a match that never reached the heights, Charlie Miller produced an outstanding performance deserving his Man of the Match award. Another promising United player made a late appearance when Danny Ogunmade came on for Charlie Miller near the end of the match. Tommo's goal may earn him a second cap in midweek and takes his tally to nine for the campaign.
